Jamesburg Historical Association
DEAI Policy
1. Purpose
The Jamesburg Historical Association (JHA) is committed to preserving, interpreting, and sharing the history of Jamesburg in a manner that is welcoming, respectful, and accessible to all.
We believe that local history belongs to everyone. The story of Jamesburg has been shaped by people of different backgrounds, experiences, traditions, and perspectives. Through this policy, JHA affirms its commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) as guiding principles that support our mission and strengthen our connection to the community we serve.
2. Guiding Principles
Diversity
JHA values the variety of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and traditions that contribute to our community and its history. We strive to recognize and preserve the stories of the many individuals, families, businesses, and organizations that have shaped Jamesburg.
Equity
JHA seeks to provide fair and meaningful opportunities for participation in its programs, volunteer activities, committees, and leadership positions. We are committed to fostering an environment in which all individuals are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
Accessibility
JHA strives to reduce barriers to participation and engagement. As resources permit, we will consider accessibility when planning programs, communicating with the public, and providing access to historical information and resources.
Inclusion
JHA is committed to creating an environment in which visitors, members, volunteers, and community partners feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged to participate in preserving and celebrating local history.
3. Board Leadership and Community Representation
JHA recognizes that diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion begin with leadership.
For guidance on DEAI, the Association has reviewed information made available through the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey, including resources informed by DEAI training funded by the New Jersey Historical Commission. By applying these history-focused insights along with local knowledge, JHA seeks to strengthen its understanding of the community it serves through broad participation in the organization and diversity of thought within its leadership.
Jamesburg is a small community, yet it is home to people of varied backgrounds, cultures, occupations, interests, and life experiences. As an active community organization, JHA regularly interacts with residents and local groups through events such as the Fall Festival, Memorial Day Parade, historical programs, tours, and community celebrations.
These interactions provide opportunities to identify individuals who demonstrate interest in history, preservation, education, civic engagement, and community service. JHA will seek to encourage participation from individuals whose perspectives, experiences, and talents can help strengthen the organization and its mission.
JHA actively collaborates with Downtown Jamesburg, local businesses, schools, civic organizations, and community groups. The Association will continue to build relationships throughout the community and seek opportunities to recruit volunteers and future leaders who reflect the broad range of experiences found within Jamesburg.
To support these goals, JHA will:
· Encourage participation from residents of all ages and backgrounds.
· Seek volunteer, committee, and board candidates from throughout the community.
· Foster relationships with cultural, educational, civic, and community organizations.
· Promote a culture of belonging in which all participants feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged to contribute.
4. Implementation and Review
JHA is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization, and implementation of this policy will be guided by available resources, practical considerations, and the needs of the Association.
The Board of Trustees will periodically review this policy and consider opportunities to:
· Improve accessibility and engagement.
· Expand community outreach.
· Strengthen volunteer and leadership recruitment efforts.
· Ensure that organizational practices remain consistent with JHA’s mission and values.
5. Statement of Belonging
The Jamesburg Historical Association welcomes all individuals who share an interest in preserving, understanding, and celebrating the history of Jamesburg.
We believe that a stronger understanding of our shared past helps strengthen our community’s future. By embracing the principles of Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion, we seek to create opportunities for all people to learn, participate, contribute, and experience a sense of belonging in the ongoing preservation of Jamesburg’s heritage.
